Fr Nelson - it is always great to revisit the old neighborhood but regrettably I wish to advise of  the death( of my wife Mary (Nolan) Sansone HS50 on May 28th. Keep her in your prayers.

Robert Weinheimer (SS E 46) also wrote to keep in our prayers John (Jackie) O'Neill, a 1946 graduate of SSS, who was killed in an auto accient on May 12, 2010.  He was a member of Good Shepherd, Inwood, Manhattan.  

Edward Maxwell 8 November 1934- 12 June 2010 (SSS elementary school

1948) died in his sleep earlier today.

Mr James Devaney of 2206 Valentine Avenue passed away and was buried at St Simon Stock the first week of May 2010.  May he rest in peace.

John Dillon has informed us that Donal Doulan ES 48 has passed away.  He was in St Patrick's Nursing Home.  The Funeral will be 1/21/10 at St Barnabas RC Church

Dear Fr. Nelson:
I am saddened to report the death of  Lawrence J. Savage, of East Northport, NY, on December 13, 2009, at the age of 74. Larry was a retired Lieutenant of the New York City Police Department Emergency Service Unit. Loving husband of the late Margaret. Beloved father of Annemarie Lent and her husband Elliot, James and his wife Diane. Dear brother of Diane Cotter and her husband Joe and sister-in-law Barbara McMahon. Larry attended Saint Simon Stock Grammar and High School in the 1950's and attended and supported alumni events over the years with his dear wife Peggy. 
I worked with Larry in the NYPD for many years and knew him to be a caring officer and a Catholic Christian gentleman. He was a long time member of the Holy Name Society, member of K of C Council 7479, and many other fraternal organizations of the NYPD.

Dear Fr. Nelson:
 
I am saddened to report the death of Mary Jane Lasher Mahoney (ES '48, HS '52).  I met Mary Jane when my family moved next door to her family at 2119 Valentine Avenue.  I was four years old.  Mary Jane became my big sister and best friend.  She was very loving, generous, loyal, and very funny.  She will be missed.
 
Mary Jane leaves behind her husband Neil and their two sons and their families.  Burial will take place tomorrow, December 17, in Scotch Plains, New Jersey.

Dear Father Nelson:

 

I am writing to inform you and the St Simon Stock Alumni of the

passing of my beloved wife Nancyanne (Behrens) Newman on

August 18th, 2009. Nancy was a 1961 graduate of St Simon Stock

High School and over the past few years had attended class reunions

and become involved with the Alumni group.

 

We were married at St Simon on December 28, 1963 and shared

47 wonderful years of deep love and adventure together.  Nancy is

the beloved mother to our children, Christine and George and

Grandmother to Matthew and Joshua Larson.  I have posted a

Memorial to Nancy which can be accessed at www.mem.com and

entering her name Nancyanne Newman. I am also attaching a

picture of Nancy and I from our wedding which you may post to

the Stockade Newsletter.

 

Nancy was buried at Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside CA.

 

I ask for your prayers for Nancy and for us as her passing is a terrible

loss for us; she was deeply loved by all of us.

I really appreciated the article on 05 education. I remember that my fellow classmates at SSS HS 1936-40 wre largely first generation American-born citizens. A reading of the 1940 list of graduates strongly suggests an Irish ghetto community. I, personally, was fortunate to parlay my SSS training to a series of full tuition scholarships and fellowships at St. Francis College, M.I.T. and the University of Notre Dame. I still have on my Xmas mailing list about 10 fellow grads and even received a card this year from our English teacher, Marie Rutledge, currently retired in Valley Stream.

If you have list of 1940 grads and addresses I would welcome receiving it. God bless.!!!!!!

Our family lived in the parish almost forty years.  I've written a book about my mother, Frances, who passed away three years ago.  The book has recently been published and is now available on Amazon.com, Barnes and Nobles and most bookstores.  The title of the book is Mom, God, and Doris Day and I believe many of the alumni who knew my family and me would enjoy reading it (Sisters Pat 54 and 58, Sharon 58 and 62, and brother Mike, 1956).

Dear Father Nelson,
I am an alumni of SSS grammar school class of 1972.  I am writing to request your prayers for my nephew William Deighan who is 8 years old and has Hodgkin's Disease.  He is currently undergoing grueling chemotherapy at Memorial Sloan Kettering which will be followed by radiation in early January.  He will then need a bone marrow transplant by the third week in January.
"Billy" is the son of my sister Eileen (McGrath) who also attended SSS.
Please forward this request for prayers to other alumni and to the current SSS community.  With God's help I will write to you again with good news about Billy's progress. God bless you and thank you for your help.

Good News : 4/05

Dear Fr. Nelson, I wrote to you a few months ago about my nephew, Billy Deighan, who is 8 years old and is undergoing a bone marrow transplant either Wednesday 4/13 or Thursday 4/14.  Billy has Hodgkin's Disease and on March 19th the doctors at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital told my sister, Eileen, that Billy's cancer had spread to his liver, lung and spine and they suggested that all treatment be stopped because the disease had progressed too far.  Eileen's immeasurable faith in God would not allow this to happen and she convinced a world renowned team of doctors to continue what they believed would be too grueling for Billy to withstand.  On April 4th another set of tests was run and Billy was found to be cancer-free.  He can now have the transplant that will, with God's help, allow him to live a life free of the hospital walls that he has called home for most of his life. 

Everyone's prayers are the reason that Billy has lived to see this day happen and they are also what will make tomorrow possible.  Please continue to keep him in your prayers and thank you so much for spreading the word to the St. Simon Stock community.
